Updating WHBMP and plugins

Oct 15, 2026

Open Settings > System Update (also reachable from Settings > System Update or the "Update available" link in the sidebar).

Update in one click

  1. Press Check for Updates. WHBMP also checks every hour on its own.
  2. The page shows the installed and available version and the release notes.
  3. Press Update. Marketplace plugins with a newer version are listed on the same page and update with one click each.

You need a valid license, and the license's Updates until date must not have passed the release date.

What the updater does

  1. Preflight checks: no other update is running, the zip extension exists, the code folders are writable, there is room for the package plus the database backup, and, once downloaded, that the new version's PHP version and extensions are met. Anything blocking is shown by name.
  2. Download and verify: the package comes from the license store with a signed checksum, which WHBMP checks.
  3. Files backup: every file it will replace is copied away first (site still up).
  4. Maintenance mode starts.
  5. Database backup: with mysqldump if the server allows it, otherwise with WHBMP's own PHP dumper. A backup only counts after it is read back and ends correctly.
  6. Copy the new files, run the database updates, then bring the site back up. If the database update fails, the files are restored.

The last three backups of each kind are kept in storage/app/private/updates/backups.

Automatic updates

On the same page you can switch on Update WHBMP automatically and Update addons automatically. They run at 03:15 daily through the cron job. A failed automatic update is shown on the page with the reason.

If an update is interrupted

A server time limit or a restart can cut an update off. A recovery task runs every five minutes, even while the site is in maintenance mode:

  • before the files were copied, it just brings the site up,
  • during the copy, it restores the files,
  • during the database update, it finishes the update (and restores the files if that also fails).

The site comes back by itself within a few minutes if cron is running.

Put a database backup back

php artisan whbmp:restore-database

It asks for confirmation and uses the newest backup. Name a file to use another one:

php artisan whbmp:restore-database 2026-10-14-update.sql.gz

Updating from the command line

php artisan whbmp:update --check # only look for updates
php artisan whbmp:update # install what is available

For a very large installation run the update this way from SSH.

Sites deployed with git

An installation deployed with git (rather than from the package) cannot use the one-click updater. Pull the new code, run php artisan migrate --force and php artisan optimize:clear.

Good practice

  • Read the release notes first.
  • Keep your own backup before a major version.
  • Update plugins after the core.
  • Check System > System Health afterwards.
