The code and the discount

  • Promotion Code: type one, or use Auto Generate.
  • Type: percentage or fixed amount, and the value. A fixed amount is entered in your main currency and converted for a client who orders in another currency.
  • A switch to disable without deleting.

What the discount is taken from

By default a code discounts everything that qualifies on an order line: the product (its setup fee and price), the configurable options the client picked and the domain. Two switches under Special rules leave parts out:

  • Exclude Configurable Options: the discount is taken off the product only. A 50% code on a hosting plan then does not also halve the price of a control panel licence, extra IP addresses or backups.
  • Exclude Domains: domain registrations and transfers, and their add-ons, are not discounted.

A fixed amount never takes off more than what can be discounted, so it cannot go past the price of the product when options are left out.

Who and what it applies to

  • Applies To: the products the discount is taken from. No selection means any product.
  • Requires: the order must include one of these products to qualify. With Also allow existing products in account to qualify, a client who already has an active service on one of them qualifies too.
  • Billing Cycles: limit the promotion to certain terms. No selection means any. A domain-only order has no billing cycle, so it is judged by Applies To and the years below.
  • Domain Registration Years: limit it to certain registration terms. No selection means any. A domain ordered with a hosting plan counts as one year.

Limits

  • Start Date and Expiry Date, both optional. The expiry day itself still works.
  • Maximum Uses (0 is unlimited). The number of uses so far is shown, and a use is given back when an order is deleted.

Special rules

  • Apply Once: the discount is taken from the first qualifying line of an order only, even if several items qualify.
  • New Signups: the client must have no active orders.
  • Existing Client: the client must have an active order. A visitor who is not signed in is asked to sign in.
  • Apply Once / Client: each client can use the code on one order only. An order that was cancelled does not count.

Where a code works

The same rules are applied everywhere an order is made:

  • The website: the customer enters the code in the Promotion code box on the cart page. The cart and the checkout show the discount before they pay, and the order is placed with the code checked once more.
  • Create Order in the admin portal, and Add Order and Add Domain Order in the mobile app.

The invoice gets one Discount line for each discounted order line, and tax is worked out on the price after the discount. An invalid, expired or used-up code, or one that does not fit the order, gives a clear message. If a code stops working between the cart and the order, the order is not placed and the customer is told why.

Not applied yet

These switches can be saved on a code but have no effect on invoices yet: Recur For and Apply this discount to renewal invoices too (a discount is taken from the first invoice only), Lifetime Promotion, and Upgrades/Downgrades.

Tips

  • Give a promotion a clear expiry date.
  • Use "New Signups" for acquisition offers and "Apply Once / Client" to stop repeat use.
  • Use "Exclude Configurable Options" when a sale price is meant for the plan only.
  • See how often a code was used in the coupon list before ending it.
