Keep a copy of your whole installation somewhere else, automatically. S3 Backup sends your database, your uploaded files and your settings to any S3-compatible storage every day, and encrypts them first if you want.

It needs nothing extra installed on your server. The plugin talks to the storage itself.

Works with

Backblaze B2, Wasabi, Cloudflare R2, DigitalOcean Spaces, MinIO, Amazon S3 and any other storage that speaks the S3 protocol.

What it backs up

  • The database, dumped, read back and checked before it is uploaded.
  • Uploaded files, from the folder you chose under Settings > File Storage. After the first run only what is new or changed is sent.
  • A settings bundle with your .env and license keys, so a rebuild on a new server is straightforward.

How it behaves

  • Daily schedule at the time you choose, with automatic retries after a failure, and a Back Up Now button.
  • Handles big sites: a backup runs in the background in small steps, saves its place after every part and file, and carries on where it stopped if it is interrupted. Large files are uploaded in parts.
  • Encryption: add a passphrase and the database, the settings bundle and, if you choose, the files are encrypted with AES-256-GCM on your server before they leave it.
  • Retention: keeps the newest database and settings backups you ask for and removes older ones. Uploaded files are never deleted from the storage, so a file deleted by mistake is still in your backup.
  • Several sites, one bucket: each site writes under its own folder.
  • Alerts: a failed backup is shown on the page and raised as a staff alert.
  • Connection test that writes, reads and removes a small object, so a wrong key, bucket, region or endpoint shows up right away.

Restoring

  1. Download the backup from the plugin page.
  2. If it is encrypted, decrypt it with php artisan s3-backup:decrypt.
  3. Restore the database with php artisan whbmp:restore-database.

Good to know

  • You need an account with a storage provider. Use an access key limited to one bucket.
  • Keep your passphrase safe. Without it, encrypted backups cannot be read.
  • Needs the cron job from Automation Settings and WHBMP 2.1.1 or newer. The File Storage integration needs 2.2.0.

  • Translated screens: The screens of this plugin are available in Spanish, German, French and Arabic, following the language each staff member chooses in the admin portal (and the language of the client for client-facing pages). Arabic is shown right to left.

Notes

  • Translations: The translations are a first draft written by machine. They are part of WHBMP 2.18.0; on an older WHBMP the screens stay in English.

New Features

  • Connection test: Test Connection now checks the storage step by step and shows each result: reaching the storage, signing in and finding the bucket, writing a file, reading it back, the temporary download link, deleting it and uploading in parts. A failure says which part would break a backup and what to change, in plain words, with the storage's own message after it.
  • Wrong region: If the bucket is in another region than the one entered, the test finds the right one, completes the other checks with it and offers a button to use it.
  • Test before saving: The button tests the details in the form without saving them. Leave the secret key blank to use the saved one.

Improvements

  • Large backups: The test now also tries a multipart upload, which big backups need, so a key that can write small files but not large ones is caught before the first backup.
  • Server clock: A warning appears when this server's clock is far from the storage's, which makes storages refuse requests.
  • Unreachable storage: A wrong endpoint, or a server that may not connect out, is reported as such instead of as a signature error.
