Google Analytics and Tag Manager
Oct 19, 2026
WHBMP tracks your sites through Google Tag Manager (GTM). You put one container ID into WHBMP, and everything else (Google Analytics 4, Google Ads, link and button tracking) is added inside GTM, without touching the website again.
What is tracked
| Where | Tracked? |
|---|---|
| Storefront (home, plans, cart, checkout, order confirmation) | Yes |
| Client area (sign-in, invoices, services, tickets) | Yes |
| Page Builder pages | Yes, automatically. |
| Admin area | No, on purpose. Your own work in the admin never counts as visits. |
| The demo site | No. Leave the demo out so its visits do not mix into your real numbers. |
Every page loads the same container. A visitor who starts on a Page Builder page and then moves to the store is counted as one visit, not two.
What you need
- The Google Tag Manager & Ads plugin, installed and activated (Plugins). Its page in the admin menu is called Marketing Tags.
- A free Google account.
Step 1: Create the Google Tag Manager container
- Open tagmanager.google.com and click Create Account.
- Enter your company name as the account name and your site address as the container name.
- Choose the target platform Web and create it.
- Copy the container ID. It looks like
GTM-XXXXXXX.
You do not paste the code Google shows you. WHBMP adds it for you.
Step 2: Create the Google Analytics 4 property
- Open analytics.google.com and create a property for your business.
- Add a Web data stream with your site address.
- Copy the Measurement ID. It looks like
G-XXXXXXXXXX.
Step 3: Add the Analytics tag inside GTM
- In Tag Manager choose Tags > New.
- Pick the tag type Google tag.
- Enter the Tag ID: your
G-XXXXXXXXXX. - Choose the trigger All Pages (or Initialization - All Pages).
- Save the tag, then click Submit and Publish. Nothing works until you publish.
Do not also paste the Google tag snippet from Analytics into your site. Two Google tags on one page count every visit twice.
Step 4: Enter the container ID in WHBMP
- Open Marketing Tags in the admin menu.
- Paste the container ID (
GTM-XXXXXXX) into Container ID. - Click Save.
The container now loads on the storefront, the client area and every Page Builder page. See Page Builder.
Step 5: Check that it works
- Open Analytics, then Reports > Realtime, and keep it open.
- In a private browser window, open your site, and a published builder page.
- Within a minute you should see yourself as an active user.
You can also use Preview in Tag Manager, or view the page source and look for your GTM- ID.
Google's Test your website button in Analytics often says "Your Google tag wasn't detected" when the tag is loaded through Tag Manager. If Realtime shows your visit, ignore it. See Google says the tag was not detected.
Orders and conversions
On the order confirmation page, and on the invoice a client lands on after checkout, WHBMP pushes a purchase event into GTM's data layer with the order number, total, currency and items.
To count orders in Analytics:
- In GTM create a Trigger of type Custom Event with the event name
purchase. - Create a Google Analytics: GA4 Event tag with the event name
purchase, using the same Measurement ID, and add this trigger. - Publish.
Google Ads conversions
If you run Google Ads, copy the Conversion ID (AW-XXXXXXXXX) and the Conversion Label from Google Ads > Goals > Conversions into the two Google Ads fields on Marketing Tags. A conversion with the order total as its value is then sent on every order. Both fields must be filled in.
Link tracking and affiliate links
Because the container is on every page, you can track clicks in GTM, for example outbound links, downloads, form submits and button clicks (the built-in triggers Click, Link click and Form submission).
Affiliate links (?ref=CODE) keep working on Page Builder pages. The page remembers the code and passes it on when the visitor orders. See Affiliates.
Visitors in the EU, UK and similar regions
Google asks you to collect consent before storing analytics cookies for these visitors. Set up Google's Consent Mode in Tag Manager (or a consent banner) if you have visitors from these regions. WHBMP does not show a cookie banner itself.
Turn it off
- Clear the Container ID and save, or deactivate the plugin. The storefront stops loading the container.
- Builder pages already published keep the code until you publish them again.
Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| Nothing in Realtime | The container was published in GTM, the Google tag has the right G- ID and the All Pages trigger, and the container ID in WHBMP has no spaces. |
| Visits counted twice | The Google tag is installed twice: once in GTM and once pasted into a page or a Custom Code (HTML) builder section. Remove one. |
| Builder pages are not tracked | Check that Marketing Tags is active with an ID saved, then open Page Builder and click Clear page cache. |
| Admin visits do not show | By design. |
| Orders do not show | Create the purchase trigger and tag described above. |
